I can still remember the day that I first signed up for this
program. I was nervous, excited, and scared all in one. I didn’t know what to
expect and it was almost surreal to me because in 2006 I was a college drop
out. I talked about going to school and earning my bachelor’s degree but I
didn’t feel that I had what I took to earn my master’s degree. I was very
confident after I passed my first class, as I got deeper in the program and
began to learn new concepts and ways of learning I began to get nervous again.
The classes got more challenging but I knew that the information that I was
learning would benefit me in the future. Halfway through the program I
discovered that I was pregnant with my third child, family members immediately
started to doubt if I would finish school due to my pregnancy. I meant to
finish school and prove them wrong, I was so head strong that days after
delivering my daughter I did a final. My determination outweighed my fear and
for the last eight months I have strived to reach my goal of earning of my
master’s degree.
This program has taught me that no matter what you may be
going through, to defy the odds and be your own hero. This program has taught
me how to apply what I learn about early childhood education whether it be in
the classroom with the children or whether it be when I am educating parents.
When we had to choose a challenge to address in our capstone class, it taught
me how to evaluate issues in early childhood education. I enjoyed talking about
my challenge each week from a different perspective. It helped me to see what I
could realistically accomplish my goals and what I needed to do to reach those
goals. This program also taught me how important research is and how it can be
applied to early childhood education. Most of all this program taught me how to
justify the importance of early education whether I was in a school board
meeting or standing in front of government officials. Since enrolling in the
program I am even more proud of being an early educator and advocate for
children and their families. I love everything that early childhood education
stands for and I look forward to being a part of the evolution of it.
My long term goal is to further my education by earning my
PHD in education and to continue to be an advocate for children. I plan to
teach as long as I can!
